In the event that the moon is visible after sunset on Sunday, March 10, 2024, the Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs has declared that the annual Ramadan fast will begin on March 11 or March 12, 2024.
The NSCIA’s Deputy Secretary-General, Prof. Salisu Shehu, signed a statement in which the council asked the Muslim Ummah to look for the Ramadan crescent on the designated date, which is 29th Sha’aban 1445 AH.
The National Moon Sighting Committee members should be notified by believers who have verifiable sightings of the crescent, according to the NSCIA.
Under the direction of His Eminence, Alh. Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar, the Sultan of Sokoto and President-General of the Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA), the entire Muslim Ummah is wished a happy and prosperous 1445 AH Ramadan.
“The council asks Allah to spare no Muslim’s life so that they can engage in ibadah (worship) and reap the greatest rewards from it.
“The President-General orders the Nigerian Muslim Ummah to seek for the crescent of Ramadan 1445 AH shortly after sunset on Sunday, March 10, 2024, which is comparable to 29th Sha’aban 1445 AH, in accordance with the National Moon Sighting Committee’s (NMSC) guidance.
In the event that virtuous Muslims see the crescent on the specified evening, His Eminence will proclaim Monday, March 11, 2024, as the first day of Ramadan in 1445 AH.
The message said, in part, “If, however, the crescent is not sighted that day, then Tuesday, 12th March 2024, automatically becomes the first of Ramadan, 1445 AH.”
Taking note of the nation’s economic suffering, Shehu urged the “endowed Muslims” to conduct charitable deeds for the less fortunate while cautioning merchants not to stockpile food or unnecessarily raise prices during the fast.
“Given the current state of the economy, the Council encourages all Muslims in the nation to perform charitable deeds for the underprivileged in their communities before to, during, and following the month of Ramadan.
Additionally, the Council warns merchants against stockpiling food or artificially raising the cost of consumer items when the public is fasting.
He went on, “We call on Muslims to use the holy month of Ramadan to pray that Allah will provide the Palestinians His divine support and free them from their oppressors.”
